Dehydration After Bariatric Surgery
Dehydration (fluid deficiency) is one of the most common complications after sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery. It can have serious health consequences.
Why Are Patients at Risk?
After surgery, stomach volume is greatly reduced. Patients can no longer drink as much at once as before. At the same time, they are not allowed to drink during meals, which further complicates fluid intake.
Signs of Dehydration
- Dark urine (should be pale yellow)
- Dry mouth
- Headaches and dizziness
- Fatigue and weakness
- Infrequent urination
Fluid Intake Recommendations
- At least 1.5-2 liters of water daily
- Drink in small sips spread throughout the day
- No fluids during meals
- Wait 30 minutes before and after eating
- Avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages
- Increase intake during heat or exercise
Suitable Beverages
- Still water (preferred)
- Herbal teas (unsweetened)
- Clear broths (in the first weeks)
- Protein shakes (count as fluid)
