Reflux Surgery

Modern treatment of gastric reflux — Izmir

Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation and chest pain.

When is Reflux Surgery Needed?

  • When medications do not provide adequate relief
  • In the case of hiatus hernia
  • With chronic symptoms that impair quality of life
  • With Barrett oesophagus (precursor to oesophageal disease)

Laparoscopic Fundoplication (Nissen)

The most common surgical method is laparoscopic fundoplication. The upper part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped around the lower part of the oesophagus to create a natural closure mechanism and prevent stomach acid from flowing back.

Advantages of Minimally Invasive Reflux Surgery

  • Small incisions — faster recovery
  • Shorter hospital stay (1–2 days)
  • Permanent solution for over 90% of patients
  • Reduction or discontinuation of medication possible
