What is Gastric Balloon Treatment?
The gastric balloon is a non-surgical method for weight reduction. A silicone balloon is inserted endoscopically or by swallowing into the stomach and filled with liquid or air.
How Does the Gastric Balloon Work?
The balloon takes up space in the stomach, reducing the effective stomach volume. Patients feel full faster and eat less. Typically, the balloon remains in the stomach for 6–12 months.
Types of Gastric Balloons
Classic Gastric Balloon: Inserted endoscopically and filled with saline solution (400–700 ml). Removal is also endoscopic after 6 months.
Swallowable Gastric Balloon (Elipse/Allurion): Swallowed as a capsule and filled with liquid — completely without endoscopy or anesthesia. Dissolves itself after approximately 16 weeks.
