Hair Loss After Bariatric Surgery
Temporary hair loss is one of the most common complaints after sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery. It affects approximately 30–40% of patients, but is usually temporary.
Why Does Hair Loss Occur?
Telogen Effluvium: Surgical stress and drastic calorie reduction put many hair follicles into the resting phase. Approximately 3–6 months after surgery, these hairs fall out.
Nutrient Deficiency: Lack of protein, biotin, zinc, iron, and vitamin D can intensify hair loss.
When Does Hair Loss Begin?
Typically 3–6 months after surgery. It usually lasts 3–6 months and then stops on its own.
What Can You Do?
- Increase Protein Intake: At least 60–80 g protein daily
- Biotin: 2500–5000 µg daily (after consulting with your doctor)
- Zinc: 8–11 mg daily
- Iron: Regular monitoring, supplementation if necessary
- Gentle Hair Care: No aggressive chemicals, no hot blow drying
- Reduce Stress
When Will It Get Better?
In most patients, hair grows back completely after 6–12 months. If hair loss persists after 12 months, definitely contact your doctor.
