Sample Nutrition Plan During Ramadan After Bariatric Surgery

A structured nutrition plan helps bariatric patients get through Ramadan healthily.

Iftar (Breaking the Fast)

First 15 Minutes:

  • 1 glass of lukewarm water
  • 1–2 dates (small amount of natural sugar)
  • Clear broth (chicken or vegetable broth)

Main Meal (30 minutes later):

  • 80–100 g lean protein (chicken, fish, turkey)
  • Steamed vegetables (3–4 tablespoons)
  • No bread or rice in the first months

Between Iftar and Sahur

  • At least 1.5 liters of water throughout the evening
  • 1 small yogurt or quark (protein source)
  • Take vitamin supplements

Sahur (Morning Meal)

  • 2 eggs (hard-boiled or soft-boiled, scrambled)
  • 30 g cottage cheese or feta
  • 1 small piece of whole grain bread (optional, later phase)
  • Adequate water

What to Avoid

  • Fried foods (börek, pastries)
  • Sugar-rich desserts (baklava, halva)
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Large portions at once
