Nutrition Tips for Bariatric Patients During Ramadan and Holidays

For bariatric patients, Ramadan and holidays present special challenges. With the right strategies, you can get through these times healthily.

Fasting During Ramadan After Bariatric Surgery

Be sure to consult with your doctor before fasting. In some cases, fasting after bariatric surgery is not medically recommended.

If You Fast:

  • Take small portions when breaking the fast (Iftar)
  • Start with liquids and soups
  • Avoid fried and high-sugar foods
  • Continue taking your vitamin supplements
  • Drink adequate water between Iftar and Sahur
  • Eat protein-rich foods at Sahur

Tips for Festivals and Celebrations

  • Take small amounts of several dishes, rather than large portions of one dish
  • Focus on protein-rich foods
  • Avoid highly sugary sweets (dumping risk!)
  • Drink water instead of sugar-containing beverages
  • Mentally prepare yourself for social invitations

Dealing with Social Pressure

Explain your situation to your family and friends. Most people understand if you eat little — especially if they know it is medically necessary.
