Preparation for Bariatric Surgery
Careful preparation is the key to success. Here you will learn what you need to know and do before a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass operation.
Medical Preliminary Examinations
- Blood tests (complete blood count, liver, kidney, hormones)
- EKG and cardiac examination
- Gastroscopy (endoscopy)
- Sleep lab if sleep apnea is suspected
- Psychological evaluation
- Nutritional counseling
Diet Before Surgery
Often 2–4 weeks before surgery, a liver-shrinking diet is recommended (high protein, low carbohydrate). A smaller liver facilitates access to the stomach and reduces surgical risks.
Lifestyle Adjustments
- Quit smoking (at least 4 weeks before surgery)
- Avoid alcohol completely
- Regular light exercise
- Adequate sleep
What You Should Bring
- All current medication lists
- Previous findings and doctor’s letters
- List of your allergies
- Companions for support
Mental Preparation
- Educate yourself thoroughly about the operation
- Talk to former patients
- Set realistic expectations
- Plan recovery time
